Build a learning habit, not just a training calendar

Make space for small, useful learning moments that connect to the work your team does every day.

Practical guide · Continuous learning
  1. Start with a real task. Ask your team which decisions, questions, or processes need more confidence. Choose one useful learning goal rather than adding an unrelated course to everyone’s schedule.

  2. Protect time for learning. Agree on a manageable window during the working week and make it clear how employees can ask for time or support. A learning plan needs room in the workday, not just a due date.

  3. Connect learning to practice. After a course or short lesson, invite employees to explain one idea they could use in their role. Use a realistic example or a low-risk practice activity to make that connection concrete.

  4. Make it safe to ask questions. Managers can model curiosity by sharing something they are learning and inviting questions without treating uncertainty as a failure. Keep personal learning needs separate from public comparison.

  5. Check what helped. Ask what was relevant, what remains unclear, and what employees would like to explore next. Read that feedback alongside course progress; completion alone does not demonstrate improved job performance.

  6. Keep the next step small. Revisit the goal, choose a useful follow-up, and adjust the plan as responsibilities change. A repeatable cycle of learning, practice, and feedback is more practical than a long list of courses with no connection to work.
