Complex Tasks and the Digestive System

Have you ever accompanied a loved one or a client to the hospital or a doctor’s appointment? If the answer is yes, you might recall being asked detailed questions about the regularity, size, shape, and color of your loved one’s or client’s bowel movements. In some instances (i.e., following a surgery), your loved one or client may not have been deemed eligible for discharge from the hospital until he or she had what is termed a “productive bowel movement.” You may wonder why healthcare professionals place an emphasis on stool. Elimination of urine and stool is a natural and necessary process, whereby wastes are removed from the body. Any disruption in this process can result in pain, infection, and on rare occasions, death.

Infection Control For Caregivers

Have you heard the saying “cleanliness is next to godliness?” The popular proverb can be found in ancient Hebrew and Babylonian texts but was coined by John Wesley in 1778 and highlights the importance of having measures in place to keep the environment where you care for your loved one or client clean. For example, routinely disinfecting the living space where your client receives care and washing your hands properly can prevent the spread of illness-causing bacteria and viruses.

Preventing Dependent Adult Abuse

Many vulnerable adults are at risk of mistreatment and negligence. In fact, most elder abuse occurs at the hands of family members and frontline health care workers. One of the best strategies for preventing dependent adult abuse is having a working knowledge of the risk factors. This course highlights why it is vital for health care workers, family caregivers, and community organizations to prevent abuse among dependent adults. You will also learn the techniques a caregiver can use to recognize signs of abuse and how to deal with barriers associated with reporting abuse.

Understanding the Normal Aging Process
